What is symmetrical upload/download? Symmetrical upload/download means that you get the same speed both while downloading as well as uploading. What does contention rate mean? This is based on the theory that not everybody uses the Internet at the same time. When a user has arrived at the page which has loaded, he will then spend time reading it. At this time no data from the Internet is required. On average, although you may have a wireless connection at 512KBs, the reality is that you are sharing your 512KBs with 50 other users. 50:1 is the average contention rate employed by ISPs in Europe.
